Preparing our student with Technology
By Ron Upton

In preparing for the “Friends of Woodsville High School” monthly meeting, I felt the information worthy of sharing with the entire community. Not being a technology expert, I try to keep up on the latest technology in an effort to support the staff and students at WHS.  We are very proud of the resources we have and the financial support from our taxpayers that allows our students to access these valuable educational tools.
Several years ago laptops were leased for all certified staff members.  The rationale was to put the technology in the hands of the faculty, make it portable and convenient, and gradually incorporate various levels of proficiency.  We have a SIS (School Information System) called PowerSchool where staff can take attendance, enter grades electronically, log text entries, and post messages using this software.  All parents are provided usernames and passwords to access their son/daughter’s information via the Internet, allowing teachers and parents to communicate on a regular basis through this technology.  One feature of PowerSchool, the Bulletin Board, is updated regularly with information from our Guidance department, giving access the latest information from that department.
As our staff continues to utilize the Internet, many have set up their own websites and/or blogs (web logs) where they are able to post assignment, activities, and chat electronically with their students.  Some of you might be wondering why on-line chats between teachers and students or between students are important.  First of all, this is a safe environment that the teacher controls.  Students are allowed access by invitation only and postings can be filtered for appropriateness before being posted to the group (or class).  After attending a class during the day, a student may reflect on the discussion and have some valuable insights to add to the topic when away from school. Instead of losing the opportunity to share this insight, the student can then log onto the class site or blog and share their thoughts without needing to be present in class. In essence, this technology allows the walls of the classroom to exist anywhere there is an Internet connection. Also, these forums allow students, who aren’t as vocal during classes, an alternative venue so their voices can be heard.  I have visited many of these sites and each time I’m impressed with the quality of work and depth of discussions that are obviously taking place in classrooms.
We have also worked on keeping our school website (http://whs.sau23.org/) current.  Mrs. Erica Wilson, our computer technology instructor, is responsible for the bulk of this maintenance and does a great job for us.  A wealth of information is available on the website.  A link for parent/student resources provides a complete electronic version of our student handbook.  Current Events takes you to various things happening both in the classroom and around campus, and this is updated regularly.  You will also find a link to Shutterfly that will take you to hundreds of pictures of events involving our students.  Diane Cowles, Kelly White, and Lorie-Ann Noyes (along with possibly others) contribute their digital photos and maintain the site; their support and time is greatly appreciated.
Woodsville High School has three computer labs.  Mr. Edwards teaches CAD (Computer Aided Drafting) in one of our two PC based labs.  Our Business Department is home to another PC lab.  Ms. Bombard teaches a variety of business applications using primarily Microsoft Office products.  In the evening, White Mountain Technical College utilizes that lab and classroom for adult education.  Mrs. Wilson teaches a variety of computer courses in our Apple computer lab.  In addition to those three traditional labs, we have three mobile labs that house Apple laptops.  Teachers are able to sign out the laptop carts, wheel them into their own classrooms, and create their own temporary lab.  We have wireless capability within our main building that enables access to the Internet for these portable labs.  By putting the technology into the hands of our students, we feel strongly that learning is greatly enhanced.
In addition to the computers, several of our classrooms have LCD projectors mounted on the ceilings.  Teachers are able to plug their laptops into the projectors and access the Internet together with their students.  Through this, the vast resources of the Internet are tapped while addressing multiple learning styles.  Captivating or engaging the students in the material provides a better learning environment and increases the likely-hood of success.  Along with the LCD projectors and computers, WHS is fortunate to have several interactive whiteboards called Smartboards.  They utilize software that allows the teacher to copy the notes from the board to a printer with the touch of a button, enhance diagrams with different colors, and cut, paste, or drag items around on the board with ease.
The Internet has also provided us with the ability to enroll our students in virtual online courses that otherwise couldn’t be offered due to our size.  Rosetta Stone is a specialized language curriculum that allows students to listen to the language and record their attempts at speaking.  One of our teachers, Mrs. Mulliken, teaches a virtual class to students all over the world.  Our students are also afforded the rights to participate in the offerings of VHS (Virtual High School).  The State of New Hampshire has developed their version of VHS called Virtual Learning Academy that we have begun to use, as well.  We hope this will eliminate the need for VHS once the number of course offerings increase.  Plato is another resource we provide to our students.  This curriculum is primarily used at most schools for credit recovery or remediation.  Our alternative school, King Street, uses this curriculum, as it is much more flexible to accommodate their non-traditional methods of teaching.  WHS utilizes this if students enter after a term has begun or if a student runs into scheduling conflicts.  We also host a satellite program in audio engineering through River Valley Tech Center located in Springfield, Vermont.  Students learn the basics of electronics and have access to a wealth of equipment provided by RVTC.
In summation, I feel WHS is doing a great job of preparing our students for the future.  The diverse course offering for such a small school is impressive.  I applaud our staff for taking the time to be “technology literate” and continue to pass these skills along to our students.  I thank our School Board and Superintendent for sharing this vision of computer literacy, and the taxpayers for financially making this possible.  As technology changes daily, it is our responsibility to provide our children with the resources that will greatly change all of our lives in the years to come.  Just think of the advancements our society has made since widespread use of the Internet has occurred.  What will our classrooms be like for our children in 20 years?

3/24/08

March 24, 2008

The Friend’s of WHS will be holding this months meeting at 7pm on Thursday, 3/27 in our library. I missed the deadline to get the ad in the local newspaper so I will plan on sending out another Instant Alert and hopefully we’ve all been spreading the word as well. I know several parents who couldn’t make the last meeting are planning on attending Thursday nights.

The spring sport seasons have completed the first week of practices. I know all coaches and athletes are hoping for some warmer weather. Indoor practices are challenging and with facilities being shared, many practices are late which makes for long days for everyone.

I would also like to thank the taxpayers for supporting the amended budget at the school’s budget hearing last Thursday night. At WHS, we are not replacing one of our retiring teachers so the net result is a reduction of staff by one full teacher. Additionally, we will be reviewing our budget to determine where we can save additional funds. Fiscal responsibility without compromising education is a delicate balance that I feel is an important role of administrators.

Please feel free to email me or call the school to add items to the agenda for the monthly Friend’s of WHS meetings. I will plan on emailing everyone the agenda prior to the meeting. Until Next Time!

Ron Upton

Friends of WHS

March 18, 2008

Hello,

The next scheduled meeting for the “Friends of WHS” will be at 7pm on Thursday, March 27th. Mr. Jones is preparing to provide information regarding our school’s mission statement revision process as discussed at our first meeting last month. Additional items we are planning on discussing are the proposed ’08-’09 daily schedule and our revision to our attendance policy. The Boston Area College tour was successful. We were able to take 24 juniors to visit several colleges in the Boston area. Spring sports began yesterday and the number of student / athletes participating seem to be up from previous years. National Honor Society will hold their annual dinner and auction on Saturday, March 29th (exact times will follow). We are excited about the potential of each team! I will try to keep this site current and post items of interest as often as possible.
